EVALUATION.

-HOW DID YOU USE MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION AND RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES?
i took advantage of all the media technologies at my disposal when creating my media texts;
- the internet for my initial research
- keeping an online blog, including hyperlinks to other websites
- video recorder to record my trailer
- numerous desktop publishers to create my final piece (microsoft word, paint and photoshop)

EVALUATION.

- HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?

From the beginning i wanted my whole media package to be sold as a brand, much like the Twilight saga. I wanted there to be key features that the public could recognise immediately.

http://journeyofathousandwords.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/twilight-saga.jpg

Therefore i decided upon common themes between the trailer, poster and magazine front cover, for example, the main picture of the vampire: white face, black hair, red lips etc. In hope to create a striking media piece.
The trailer itself was also very dark and i used natural lighting to create more suspense.

EVALUATION.

-WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?

Overall, my audience feedback was positive. The main points brought up were:
- the genre of the film was clearly demonstrated by considering the mise en scene, music, props/costumes etc.
- i asked 10 random people to look at my movie trailer and asked if they would want to see the movie after watching the teaser trailer and 8/10 said they would.
- the poster and magazine front cover were very striking and would stand out.

Other points raised:
- found certain scenes uncomfortable (the licking scene towards the end)
- slightly disturbed.

taking into consideration that the genre is horror these points work in my favour.

EVALUATION.

- IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PIECE USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

http://host.trivialbeing.org/up/tdk-jun6-empire-batman.jpg

I researched existing magazine front covers (mainly looked at Empire covers, as i wanted my target audience to be as broad as Empire's readership) to make sure my media product followed the simple conventions of existing film magazines so it wouldn't look out of place on the news stand.

I also looked at existing film promotion posters and used them as a template when creating my own.

character profiles for trailer.

This is the main vampire, she is used on the poster promoting the film and on the front of the film magazine.

This is the second vampire. I chose to dress them in red and black clothes (in complete contrast to their victims costume) - the connotations carried by red are: blood, danger, power and desire. and the connotations of black are: power, death, evil and mystery. these are all themes that i wanted to come across in the trailer. i tried to make them look as possessed as possible, this being done by crazy, back-combed hair, white face paint and heavy black eye make-up. these seem to be common ideologies in horror films (found out through researching existing media).

Izzy is playing the innocent character. Her long flowing hair (a characteristic often seen of Princesses in fairy tales) carries innocent connotations. I also dressed her in all white, as it shows she is pure and purity is what the vampires want. In contrast to the white (you can't see in this picture) but she was wearing red high heels; red represents fear and anger. emotions which contrast her pure and innocent factors. I also chose for her to have light make up - again to enforce the purity of her character.

trailer story board

storyboard for my teaser trailer.

1. close up's/no sound/flowing between shots
2. medium shot/dramatic music starts playing/black screen in between shots
3. medium close up/natural sound/dissolve into next shot
4. over-the-shoulder/natural sound with quiet music underneath/editing gets quicker
5. extreme close up/music continues to play/black screen to 'coming soon'

MAGAZINE FRONT COVER

this is my final film magazine promoting the film.

first ideas

this is just a first rough idea of my magazine front cover.

Film Magazine Research

i thought before i started designing my magazine front cover i'd research existing film magazines so i could familiarise myself with some of the conventions etc.

these links have given me a rough idea of how to layout my magazine front cover, bold typefaces, quite masculine over look, a
movie star/movie logo will dominate the page.
mainly the pages are quite messy looking and clumsy with lots of cover lines etc.

final poster idea.

here i used photoshop to produce the promotional poster for my movie.

poster development.

this is the most successful photo (that i've edited) and shall be using for my final poster.
this is an edited version of her lips. this is just another poster idea, nothing is final yet.
here i thought i try it landscape but i don't like it. i prefer the portrait version.

this is my first unedited photo for the poster.

DEVELOPMENT

Above i have sketched out a couple of ideas for the film promotion poster.
the feedback i got back so far is that the bottom one seems more successful and lures people in.
i will sketch some more ideas later on.

i've decided to call my film 'Vicious Lips' and above i have sketched out a few font ideas for the poster etc.
i then got feedback on them and number 5 seemed to be the most popular choice and i will be using that one in my final piece.
Number 4 was also very popular but i personally prefer number 5.

POSTER RESEARCH

before i start designing my poster to promote my film i thought i'd research some already existing ones, to see what works and what doesn't.

the colour red is apparent in the majority, connotations of blood etc.
there's a strong sense of mystery and confusion.
some portray a more violent side to vampires (there's two sides to them)
overall the images are dark and moody, i hope to recreate this theme in my poster.

Genre development

with the recent success of the Twilight saga, True Blood, Daybreakers and Being Human the exposure of the world of vampires are in high demand. So i thought as it's so popular, having my movie trailer being about vampires will attract a wide audience and will gain instant success.
